Basecamp Social Groups
Our groups are designed to help you meet people you’ll connect with and form friendships you’ll take with you.
Find Your People
Making friends as an adult is hard. Through her work at PEERS®, our founder, Dr. Moody, sees firsthand how hard it is to meet people. And even if you do find a club or group to join, its hard to actually become friends - real friends - with the people there. That’s what inspired us to make something new - Basecamp Social Groups.
What to Expect
Basecamp Social Groups are facilitated by leader(s) who have specialized training in PEERS® evidence-based social skills programming to ensure things go smoothly and everyone feels included. Each group follows a similar supportive structure to intentionally move from casual conversation toward friendships over a 8-week period.
Ages 18+, small groups of 6-12 people
Weekly meetings in the community or online

Support to start connecting outside of the group

Ready to jump in?
Let’s see if you’re a good fit:
-
Our groups are a good fit for adults who communicate fluently and can follow along at a pace of community college level class.
-
Part of our group process is supporting adults to plan get-togethers. Get-togethers are unsupervised, meaning that the group facilitator is not present.
As such, we are looking for adults who can safely and independently navigate their community without supervision. This means being able to coordinate transportation (e.g., take the bus, get an uber, arrange for a ride), cross streets, and follow directions to find meeting spots in the community.
-
Adults must be respectful to others in the group. Verbal and physical aggression toward others will not be tolerated.
-
We will be communicating as a group via text. If you do not have a way to text, you can set up a free Google Voice and link it to your email.
Our online groups meet over video conferencing. You will need a device with a camera. We strongly recommend a laptop or desktop computer so you can see others in the group more easily.
-
In-person social groups meet in the community. More information about location will be provided for each individual group and adults are asked to consider whether this location works for them. Please feel free to contact us if we can be of assistance related to accessibility.
-
We are looking for adults who are eager to meet new people and who want to make new friends.

There is a lot that we think makes these groups unique:
Each social group is organized around a particular interest, which creates a built-in connection from the get-go.
Each social group includes time for more casual conversation as well as more structured activities.
The group leader(s) skillfully help you find and remember points of connection you had with others.
The group leader(s) have specialized training in social skills and neurodiversity.
All social group members will be supported to text and make plans with each other, as part of the group.
It’s not just about having fun (though we will do that too!), we want to build a bridge over the gap between talking to someone and being friends with them.
-
Neuroinclusive means that we have designed our groups to be welcoming and supportive for both neurotypical and neurodivergent people.
Neurodivergent people might include those who identify as autistic or as having ADHD. Our social group leaders all have experience working with these populations. We work to celebrate the strengths each person brings, and can also provide coaching as needed to help you navigate interactions smoothly.
-
During the group, we do ask that you talk to and get to know everyone. Part of the group will also be texting the group chat and planning activities to do together. We ask that during these 8-weeks, everyone is included in all texts and plans.
That being said, we don’t necessarily expect that everyone will become long-lasting friends after the group is over. Friendship is a choice, and both people have to choose to maintain it. After the 8-weeks, you may choose to communicate or hang out with just one or two people you met.
-
We ask that adults until after the 8-week group is finished to ask anyone out. This gives you an opportunity to get to know someone as a friend first.
As a reminder, dating is a choice, and we have to be respectful of others’ decisions.
-
We recommend this, as it will allow you to make friends with people you could spend time with in person (even if just occasionally). However, we are happy to talk to you about your unique situation.
For our in-person groups, we strongly encourage you to consider whether the weekly travel to the groups is feasible.
For our online groups, we will be organizing a one-time in-person event for each group in Southern California. This event is in addition to the 8-weeks and is optional, but we believe may help deepen friendships.
-
Reach out by email or by phone to start the process! Please let us know what social group you’re interested in, and we’ll schedule a brief call with you to chat about the group and see if its a good fit.
-
If you’d like someone to join you on the initial enrollment call to help you decide if you’d like to join, that is more than welcome.
During the group itself, we ask that only the group members attend. If you have a friend you’d like to do the social group with, they can enroll separately.
Sometimes parents or family members are involved with picking up or dropping off to the group, and we are also happy to include parents on email communications if you prefer.
-
We aim for each group to be 6-12 adults. If there is not enough interest in a specific group, we will reschedule the group to a later date to ensure it can create meaningful opportunities to meet other people.
-
Our in-person social groups are 90 minutes long.
Our online social groups are 60 minutes long.
-
Our in-person social groups cost $500 for the 8-week session.
Our online social groups cost $350 for the 8-week session.
For Regional Center clients, adults can explore utilizing Self-Determination funding for our groups.
Outside of the scheduled group times, adults will be supported to organize and invite group members to get-togethers in the community. We encourage low-cost activities, but there may be costs (e.g., food, tickets). These get-togethers are optional and adults can choose which to attend.
-
No, we only offer the social groups as a 8-week package, and refunds are not available. Our groups are designed to help you make friends, so we believe it’s important that the same group of people attend consistently throughout.
-
Absolutely! It’s a great way to meet more people with common interests.
